Car Park Improvement Work
Due to the need to provide additional parking places at Scarborough Hospital the Trust is undertaking work to provide a more robust surface for parking on the grassed area next to the West wing block (Holly, Ash and Willow Wards). This work will start today, Monday 20 February and is expected to last five days.
Andrew Bennett, Head of Estates and Capital Services explained: "The grassed area will have to be closed to allow the surfacing work to be carried out which will reduce the amount of car parking spaces available at Scarborough Hospital this week. In addition, we may have to reduce car parking along the hospital entrance drive from Woodlands Drive in order to enable the heavy equipment required to carry out the work to access the site as well as lorries delivering the necessary materials. These parking restrictions on the hospital entrance drive may need to be in place all week but the Estates Department will monitor the situation closely in order to maximise the number of car parking spaces available each day during the work.
"We apologise in advance for any disruption or inconvenience that this essential work may cause staff, patients and visitors to the hospital. We appreciate your co-operation and patience during this work."
SCBU fundraising drive to improve facilities
The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Scarborough Hospital has launched a fundraising drive to raise £50,000 to improve the parent’s facilities on the ward.
The hospital currently has two rooms close to the unit where parents can stay when their baby is being specially cared for.
This work will not only update these two rooms but includes physical changes to the lay out of the rooms to improve access and security as well as providing a multi-purpose room where parents and siblings can eat, rest and play.
Sharon Addey, Sister, explained: “The two rooms are understandably very popular as parents want to stay as close to their baby as possible. Unfortunately, because they are not contained within the unit, babies are not allowed to stay with their parents, which can sometimes cause further anxiety.
“Keeping parents and their babies together has many benefits including better bonding and successful long term breast feeding.
“In addition, the rooms have not been updated or decorated for many years so we want to not only update the rooms but change their access so that they are within the unit’s security system as well as updating the existing kitchen and bathroom facilities.
“We also plan to create a multi purpose sitting, dining, family room which families frequently tell us would be beneficial as they currently have no where to eat meals, space to entertain toddlers or to just relax.
“We are often approached by parents who would like to make a donation to the unit and fundraising efforts are always very gratefully received.
“Any new donations that we receive will go towards this worthwhile project and our £50,000 goal.”
If you would like to get involved in fundraising or to make a donation please contact, Sharon Addey, SCBU Manager on 01723 342125.
Breast service returns to Scarborough
From next week breast surgery patients can, once again, be treated at their local hospital.
In July, York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust agreed to formally integrate their breast services.
New and diagnostic elements of the breast service were temporarily transferred to York Hospital whilst work was undertaken to develop a state-of-the-art mammography suite at Scarborough Hospital.
Mike Proctor, Chief Executive, said: “This has been a great example of how the integration with York will not only ensure that services are maintained at Scarborough Hospital but will provide a much improved service.
“The new mammography equipment will allow us to access state-of-the-art image quality and will help deliver our vision of a safer, high quality, breast service within the Scarborough area.
“I would like to thank our Breast Care Nurses and Consultants as well as the support staff who have helped maintain the service during this transition.”
The service will continue to be provided jointly with York Hospital with Consultants working across both sites.

parking at hospital sites
In order to improve the safety of its hospital sites, Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust is introducing car park management. Penalty charges will be £60, or £30 if paid within 14 days, and will be administered by an external company.
However, there are concessions
Car Parking concessions are available to patients visiting the hospital for treatment three or more times a week. Free parking is also available to visitors if they have a relative in hospital for more than five days. For further information ask at the Main Reception, speak to a member of ward staff or contact PALS on 01723 342434.
About the GP Access Centre at Bridlington
There is a GP access centre at Bridlington Hospital, Entrance A, operating seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. Any member of the public can see a doctor or nurse at the new practice or phone and book an appointment beforehand. The extended opening hours give greater choice of appointment times in the evening and over the weekend, including bank holidays.
You do not need to be registered with the practice. You can use the services offered at the practice as well as the services at your own GP surgery.
The GP access centre is run by Bridlington Healthcare NHS Collaborative, a new joint arrangement between NHS East Riding of Yorkshire Community Services and four of Bridlington’s GP practices - Dr Meldrum and Partners, Dr MacNab and Partners, Dr Farley and Partners and Dr Harris and Partners.
Medical services offered by the existing GP practices within Bridlington stay the same, with the new GP access centre providing other NHS services.
The centre offers patients the full range of services delivered by standard GP practices plus extra services including substance misuse. Obesity services will be available. Contact the GP access centre on 01262 423464.
